My husband presented a false DNA report in court eight days after my emergency C-section, claiming our newborn wasn’t his.

Part 3: The Federal Warrants

Special Agent Sarah Miller walked to the center of the courtroom while two federal agents remained near the doors.

“Judge Vance, we apologize for the interruption,” she said. “We have federal arrest warrants for Julian Mercer, Chloe Bennett, and additional individuals connected to this investigation.”

Chloe immediately backed away from Julian.

“What? I didn’t do anything. I’m just his girlfriend.”

Agent Miller opened the folder in her hands.

Investigators had traced offshore accounts connected to money missing from employee pension funds at Apex Logistics. According to the evidence, Chloe was listed on accounts that received some of those funds, including transactions investigators believed were connected to the payment made to my former attorney.

Chloe’s face went pale.

Julian stood beside Sterling without saying a word.

Agent Miller continued. The investigation involved suspected wire fraud, insurance fraud, money laundering, and a conspiracy connected to what had happened during my emergency delivery.

That final statement changed the entire courtroom.

Julian finally spoke.

“What conspiracy?”

His confidence had vanished.

I looked at Maya sleeping in her carrier before turning back toward him.

“The insurance policy wasn’t the only reason investigators started examining my surgery.”

Three days before Maya was born, Julian knew doctors were concerned about complications in my pregnancy. Investigators later discovered communications suggesting that someone connected to my medical care had been offered money shortly before the emergency C-section.

Sterling turned sharply toward Julian.

I continued carefully.

According to investigators, the payment was connected to an anesthesiologist at Northside Hospital. They suspected Julian had tried to influence what happened during my surgery so that a dangerous medical event could appear to be a tragic complication.

The courtroom became completely silent.

Even Sterling stepped away from Julian.

Agent Miller confirmed that the anesthesiologist had been taken into custody earlier that morning. Investigators had recovered messages and financial records they believed connected him directly to Julian.

Julian shook his head.

“This is insane. Clara is trying to destroy me.”

“No,” Agent Miller replied. “The evidence is why we’re here.”

Chloe suddenly began crying.

She turned toward Julian, her voice shaking as she demanded to know what he had told investigators. Julian ordered her to stop talking, but the panic in his face only made her more frantic.

“You said everything was handled,” she cried. “You said we’d get the insurance money and leave.”

Julian’s expression collapsed.

“Chloe, shut up.”

Agent Miller immediately told both of them not to say anything further.

Two agents approached Julian and informed him that he was under arrest. Another moved toward Chloe, who kept insisting that Julian had planned everything and that she had only followed his instructions.

For months, I had imagined what I might say if Julian were ever forced to face what he had done.

When the moment came, I said nothing.

I simply held Maya.

Judge Vance called the courtroom back to order once the agents had finished. He made it clear that the criminal allegations would be handled separately and that the family court would not determine Julian’s guilt.

But what had happened that morning changed the divorce proceedings immediately.

Julian’s request for an expedited ruling based on the false DNA report was denied. The court also issued temporary protective measures for Maya and me while the criminal investigation continued, and disputed marital assets were ordered preserved until their ownership could be properly determined.

The judge looked toward me.

“Mrs. Mercer, the court will ensure that you and your child have the appropriate protections while these matters are investigated.”

“Thank you, Your Honor.”

Only then did I feel how exhausted I was.

My incision throbbed beneath my clothes, and my hands trembled as I lifted Maya’s carrier. Eight days earlier, I had been fighting to get through an emergency delivery; now I was watching federal agents lead my husband away from the courtroom.

As Julian reached the doors, he turned toward me.

For the first time, there was no arrogance in his expression.

There was fear.

I didn’t respond.

Because the arrests were not the end of the story.

Investigators still had to determine how much money had disappeared from Apex Logistics, who had helped Julian manipulate the DNA report, and exactly what had happened inside the hospital before Maya was born.

And the answers would decide whether my husband had merely tried to steal my future—or whether he had been willing to make sure Maya and I never had one.
